Lord Ganesha is popularly known as the remover of obstacles and the god of intellect. He is one of the most worshipped and adored gods. He is the son of Shiva and Parvati, and is prayed to before starting any new activity. Lord Ganesha is believed to help in building the foundation for a prosperous activity since he is known as the remover of obstacles. He is the patron of language, art and science.
The big belly of lord Ganesha symbolises the entire universe, everything good or bad. The large elephant head symbolises wisdom, understanding, and a discriminating intellect that one must possess to attain perfection in life. The wide mouth represents the natural human desire to enjoy life in the world. The large ears signify that a perfect person is the one who possesses a great capacity to listen to others and assimilate ideas. He is depicted with two or four hands sitting on his Vahana (vehicle), standing or engaging in a multitude of activities. He is depicted in a variety of ways overtime, but in some ancient depictions he holds his own broken tusk in one hand, a sweet in the other. His tusk is twisted trying to taste the sweet, a food lover as he is. He holds an axe in one upper arm and vehicle is the mouse, peacock and serpentand a pasha (noose) in the other.
The term ‘leader of the group’ (Ganesha) was used in early Vedic texts but not in the form of a deity, his depictions as a revered deity only appeared in 4-5 century BC. According to Kundalini Yoga, Ganesha resides in the first chakra, called Muladhara (Mūlādhāra). Mula means ‘original, main’; Adhara means ‘base, foundation’. The Muladhara chakra is the principle on which the manifestation or outward expansion of primordial divine force rests. His unusual body is the celebration of the manmade world. His consorts are known to be Riddhi(prosperity), Siddhi (attainment) and Buddhi(intelligence).
